FAQs
Adults
How can I learn to sail?
We run RYA certified courses with qualified instructors.
When will I be able to use club boats?
Those who have passed Level 1 can take out club boats in light conditions.
What club boats do you have?
Visions, Lasers, Pico’s, Laser 200 plus kids boats (oppies, picos, toppers & fevas)
Once I’ve done my course what do I do?
We have informal sailing on Thursday nights and instructors are often around to help out. We also often offer instructors to help on a Sunday afternoon alongside the children’s sailing.
Ladies that Launch also offers informal teaching approx once a month.
Sailing Principal Phil Berquist can offer support and advice.
If I’m a beginner do I need to pay for club boats?
You don’t need to pay for club boats to do a course but you will probably want to immediately afterwards so you can practice.
Kids & Juniors
Is there minimum experience to join Wing Cadets?
Yes, we usually require Stage 1 or similar experience. If it’s unclear whether they have enough experience they can attend a session for free and we will assess. They should email Mike to confirm when is convenient.
How can beginners take part?
They can attend our week-long courses at Whitsun or in the summer holidays. Alternatively, we can teach them on the adult weekend courses separately. The week-long courses are probably better as they’ll meet more children and its more geared up for them.
Do they need any equipment?
We can loan buoyancy aids for the first season and we have a range of junior boats – Oppies, Picos, Toppers and Fevas
What age do we teach?
8 – 16. RYA recommend 8 is the minimum but we will occasionally take 7 years old on a trial basis.
What if I’m not sure?
We are happy for kids who can sail already to do a trial session of Wing Cadets.
Do we have to be members?
Yes for Wing Cadets. Either family or one parent as a social member and child as junior.
For holiday courses membership isn’t required but we offer a discount rate for members.
Do we have to pay for boats?
Not if children only sail during Wing Cadet sessions. The Wing Cadet fee includes this.
More info is in the Wing Cadet leaflet.
